Description: Richard Dawkins, Daniel Dennett, Sam Harris and Christopher Hitchens sit down for an unmoderated 2-hour discussion. The four authors have recently received a large amount of media attention for their writings against religion - some positive, and some negative. In this conversation the group trades stories of the public's reaction to their recent books, their unexpected successes, criticisms and common misrepresentations. They discuss the tough questions about religion that face to world today, and propose new strategies for going forward. cueshark ::: Favorites 2007-12-20 17:35:57 Harris has amazing insight. Respect :< __________________________________________________
Wikimedian ::: Favorites 2007-12-20 17:21:08 Well that's good! Of course, there's A LOT to learn, but that doesn't mean that we can't learn A LOT in our lifetimes! Good luck :) __________________________________________________
Chaffinch4 ::: Favorites 2007-12-20 17:17:27 Don't worry Wikimedian, so far I've spent my life studying and trying to learn. It is just the more I know, the more I realize there is to still to learn -- and it's a short life! __________________________________________________
Wikimedian ::: Favorites 2007-12-20 17:08:14 That's not good at all, Chaffinch4, you should be learning more as you get older, not less. What is the point of your life if you aren't learning anything? Mind you that reviewing and changing your thoughts isn't "knowing less", it's just learning new things! __________________________________________________
Chaffinch4 ::: Favorites 2007-12-20 16:54:32 Wikimedian, I don't agree with you, but I admire your confidence. Around about aged 14 I thought I knew everything but every year since I feel I know less and less. __________________________________________________
cameronmetz ::: Favorites 2007-12-20 16:53:44 I'm not sure that this passage is a very clear analogy to capitalism as I understand it. This part gives it away: "give unto them for me and thee". Without knowing the context of the quote, I can only conclude that this is something akin to Robin Hood: take from the rich (ocean) and give to the poor (the people/"me and thee). This is closer to socialism, as is the majority of Christ's philosophy. __________________________________________________
rmSD1 ::: Favorites 2007-12-20 16:38:15 I think trying to rank these brilliant men is folly. Dawkins and Dennett are brilliant and just as much as Harris and Hitchens. If you don't believe that I would suggest you re-read the works which are a testament to their brilliance. __________________________________________________
Wikimedian ::: Favorites 2007-12-20 16:29:03 Well, Harris is becoming more academic! And I'm working to become an academic, but Dennet and Hawkins just aren't impressive in these discussions. Anyway, these guys, with the exception of Harris and, to an extent, Hitchens, are all just for show. There analysis is very superficial. Hitchens is interesting because of his eloquence and past, but his arguments aren't very engaging. Harris is the only one with depth on the subject, but I disagree with his conclusions. __________________________________________________
HolyFungus ::: Favorites 2007-12-20 16:23:57 "Will these "4 horsemen" tackle the root?" The "root" is irrationality. Yours, in fact. __________________________________________________
Chaffinch4 ::: Favorites 2007-12-20 16:04:01 Wikimedian, sounds like you're not keen on academics. __________________________________________________
dionusos2 ::: Favorites 2007-12-20 14:08:10 It's a two hour discussion. You people act like they spent months solely dedicated to this discussion. Lighten up, morons. That's like saying party leaders shouldn't get together and discuss mutual goals because it's "a big self-love party." absurd. __________________________________________________
dionusos2 ::: Favorites 2007-12-20 14:04:31 Religious texts call for domination of 'the ohters.' What we call fundamentalism today is taking these books by some of their more obvious literal demands. The argument that religion was made corrupt by its practitioners is a myth. __________________________________________________
dionusos2 ::: Favorites 2007-12-20 14:01:59 "they come off as arrogant and self-congatulatory whereas pitted against a creationist or theologian they seem lucid and persuasive." Not really. Here they're bouncing different perspectives off of one another in real-time. A round-table discussion of religion and god by fellow atheists with mutual goals isn't a waste of time (are you taking this anti-god movement that seriously?) And they're not suddenly arrogant merely because they aren't pitched in a heated debate. That's silly. __________________________________________________
trac4yt ::: Favorites 2007-12-20 13:47:21 Thus, more likely, "greasing of the palms".. "For the love of money is the root of all evil.." (1Ti 6:10) Religion becomes the "front" for the money/power quest. Eliminating religion attempts to snip a branch, but leaves the roots firmly in place. Will these "4 horsemen" tackle the root? :-O __________________________________________________
tbonealex ::: Favorites 2007-12-20 13:45:52 I'm all for helping Ms Ali but I'd just assume send her the cash and skip the DVD. __________________________________________________ |
