Description:

Jelly Roll Morton considered himself to be the "inventor of jazz". Although this certainly is an exaggeration, he was crucial in development of early jazz. This typical composition was recorded for Hot Jazz Club America on September 15th, 1926.

One of my favorite recordings, I love it dearly and it far outpaces other arrangments of the same tune... but upon listening to it several times I'm struck by how abysmal the trombone solo is. Gross! It's charming in context because it's so short, but really, it's SO bad!

Glad you like this despite the trombone!

Incredibly good music! I own a Morton sheet music book and it's beautifully constructed music, but awfully hard to play on the piano, e.g. King Porter Stomp, Grandpa's Spells and Kansas City Stomp.

I don't play music myself, but it's obvious this is quite virtuosic.

Forget Mr. Jelly's ego. For my money if you let the music speak for itself he was without a doubt the best writer/arranger of Jazz - period.

Unbelievable-I was going to ask your thoughts on Jelly Roll after reading your post about Annette H. And here you're a fan already. Thought you might be if you liked Annette's style. His music backs most of the Chaplin clips being posted and certainly adds a lot of entertainment value to those old silents.

That's what he pretended himself, but others before him most certainly played jazz too, although this indeed is a fairly "modern" sounding arrangement, actually ahead of its time.

So thanks a lot for this track, kspm01. Say, do you maybe have Jelly Rolls record of "The Jelly Roll Blues"? Not the "Original Jelly Roll Blues" of 1926 with the Peppers but that record of 1938... I find it nowhere but it really thrilled me when I heard it by accident.

I really wonder how much more popular Jelly Roll Morton could be.... he certainly deserves it but maybe he just was too much of a bragger and a "winin boy"- his ego surely brought him a lot of enemies. Nevertheless his records are far ahead of his time. He was by far the most sophisticated and skilled arranger of old New Orleans. These arrangments kick after 80 years!

Thanks a lot for your fine comments! Absolutely, he was far ahead of his time, and this music is just as fresh as when it was arranged.

It even rocks nowadays! Thank you so much for your appreciation. By the way, this the only one I managed to upload today, several attempts were unsuccessful, the site is seriously suffering from kind of a "bandwith angina".

Yes, it is experiencing the chest pains of trying to operate at 110% (and growing!) every hour of the day. You're right. This record swings no matter what the year.
